Blum and Muhlberg, we find out that all the complaining by the anti-smoking groups about the "wild, wild West" of e-cigarette marketing in an unregulated environment is bogus, as these groups failed to insist on an amendment which would have regulated e-cigarettes as tobacco products. Instead, these groups - back in 2009 - were actually fighting to get e-cigarettes off the market entirely. Regulating them as tobacco products would have meant institutionalizing their entrance and penetration into the market. It would have risked having these safer products compete with much more hazardous products like regular tobacco cigarettes. And that, by the reasoning of Tobacco-Free Kids and Friends, would have been a disaster.

According to the of the grant proposal, the research question that the lab team is proposing to investigate is as follows: "The goal of this application is to determine the effects of Third Hand Smoke on wound healing. ... It is known that first-hand smoke and secondhand smoke (SHS) inhibit wound healing but nothing is known about the effects of third-hand smoke (THS) on wound healing. ... To address this problem, we will use mice, expose them for 6 months to THS present in their cages and, at the end of the exposure period, we will perform wounds on their backs and study the time course of healing by examining not only the wound areas but also the properties of the tissues."

This is quite a twist, since usually Congress oversees the enforcement of laws. Here, Representatives Waxman, Harkin, and Welch are requesting that their state Attorneys General violate the law by illegally enforcing an invalid contract.

Commenting on these results, Deborah Arnott - the chief executive of ASH - stated:

In fact, many vapers have reported that after switching to electronic cigarettes, they have lost the desire to return to smoking because the taste of tobacco cigarettes is no longer pleasant after having experiencing the flavors of electronic cigarettes. It is possible, then, that electronic cigarettes do not serve as a gateway to tobacco smoking but instead, serve as a sort of barrier to tobacco smoking.

One would expect a similar experience with youth e-cigarette experimenters. Once they get used to the sweet flavors of electronic cigarettes, it is hard to fathom that they could then be drawn to the harsh taste of tobacco. It is difficult to imagine a youth switching from a gummy bear flavored e-cigarette to a Marlboro.

Based on this single study, Dr. Glantz concludes: "the FDA must be extremely careful about assuming that e-cigarettes uniformly pose less risk than conventional cigarettes."
