The rest of the story is that Glantz and colleagues are essentially calling for a ban on all existing electronic cigarettes. Why? Because every electronic cigarette contains flavors. In fact, the presence of flavors is the only distinguishing characteristic of different brands of e-liquids or cartridges.

In addition, he formerly led the Institute for Global Tobacco Control, which is funded by GSK and Pfizer. Moreover, until 2009, Dr. Samet received regular honoraria from Pfizer for his service on the Pfizer Global Tobacco Advisory Board."

We are only two weeks into 2014, but that's all the time needed for the rigor of tobacco control science to have degraded to about the lowest level imaginable.

If the FDA is not sure that removing all of the carcinogens from cigarettes - and reducing their concentrations to no more than trace levels - is going to make "smoking" safer (even forgetting the fact that there is no smoke and no combustion associated with vaping), then one has to ask whether the FDA is basing its positions only on science, and not on any political or ideological concerns.

In her on CDC's "Tips from Former Smokers" anti-smoking campaign, Nancy Wride of Elements Behavioral Health made an interesting observation. On its web site describing a variety of possible strategies to quit smoking, the CDC does not list electronic cigarettes. Wride therefore asked the CDC why electronic cigarettes are not included on its web site as a potential smoking cessation aid.
