To be valid, the study needs to examine e-cigarette smokers who have not tried these products before and are trying them for the first time in an attempt to quit smoking. Otherwise, the study cannot truly claim to draw conclusions about how helpful e-cigarettes are for smoking cessation among cancer patients.

According to CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, the thousands of smokers who have quit smoking via electronic cigarettes are nothing but anecdotes. As Dr. Frieden told the Los Angeles Times in , referring to smokers who have quit using e-cigarettes: "the plural of anecdote is not data."

From a public health perspective, the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation must be assessed by examining how effective the product is for smokers who are trying to quit. When you do that properly, this initial evidence suggests that you find out e-cigarettes are a viable smoking cessation aid for a subset of smokers.

The FDA's Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) assures us that for defective cigarettes, such as those which taste wrong, "issues will be addressed to ensure the protection of the public health."
