Experienced vapers will tell you that different e-liquids taste different depending on the temperature of the heating element. You cannot get a consistent taste if the voltage of the heating element is not consistent. If it is too hot, you can burn the e-liquid, and it tastes awful. If the element burns too cold, it will not provide the vapor you want.

But beyond the issue of medical or public health malpractice, I am most concerned about the simple principle of honesty. As medical and health professionals, our very first obligation is to be truthful with our patients and with the public. The information being provided by this respiratory therapist is untruthful. It is simply not the case that smoking may be less hazardous than vaping. There is no credible scientific debate about that issue in the year 2014.

A new published today in the journal Tobacco Control demonstrates why the FDA's proposed regulatory approach for electronic cigarettes makes no sense. In fact, the new research shows why the FDA's approach would be a complete bureaucratic nightmare, while not actually protecting the public's health.

In his on the Hit & Run blog, Jacob Sullum nicely points out the way in which Dr. Frieden is completely ignoring the multitude of data showing that literally thousands of ex-smokers were able to quit smoking using electronic cigarettes. He continues to call these people nothing but "anecdotes." Sullum also points out that Dr. Frieden is " from whole cloth in an effort to portray theproduct as a grave threat to public health and a menace to 'ourchildren.'"

Furthermore, later in the paper they reinforce this point more specifically, writing: "the cross-sectional nature of our study does not allow us to identify whether most youths are initiating smoking with conventional cigarettes and then moving on to (usually dual use of) e-cigarettes or vice versa...".
