Before making an accusation like this, it is imperative that Dr. Glantz have evidence that electronic companies have mobilized these think-tanks to push their policy agenda. But the evidence that Glantz cites to support his accusation merely demonstrate that these groups have taken positions which support electronic cigarettes as a potential harm reduction strategy for tobacco control. None of the documents that Glantz cites indicate that any electronic cigarette company had anything to do with orchestrating, mobilizing, or affecting the positions taken by these groups.

It the policy were based on health principles, then it certainly would not exempt current employees. Clearly, the hospital doesn't care that much about the health principle, since it will continue to employ smokers with no questions asked.

In a separate published in the same issue of Circulation, these same authors write: "As of March 2014, 5 population-based studies had examined the relationship between e-cigarette use and quitting smoking. Because these studies did not measure whether people were using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid or other reasons for use such as to circumvent smoke-free laws, they did not directly test the efficacy of e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids." Among the companies for which he has consulted on such products are GlaxoSmithKline plc and its affiliates (collectively, “GSK”); Pfizer, Inc. and its affiliates (collectively, “Pfizer”); Novartis AG and its affiliates (collectively, “Novartis”); Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC and its affiliates (collectively, “Sanofi-Aventis”); and Aradigm Corp. and its affiliates (collectively, “Aradigm”). During the last ten years, he has received at least approximately $10,000 per year for such consulting. He has also received grant support for research and writing from GSK and/or Pfizer on at least five occasions. In 2010, he co-authored a study, funded by Pfizer, on the use of its drug, Chantix, for smoking cessation."
