As I earlier this week, the truth is that this paper provides no evidence whatsoever that e-cigarette use is a gateway to smoking. Instead, it is entirely possible - and quite likely - that youths who use e-cigarettes are more likely to be heavier and more resistant smokers. I argued that by relying on this false evidence, the politicians are essentially lying to the American public. They are misrepresenting the scientific evidence, twisting it to try to support their pre-determined conclusion.
Since the CDC admits, in the first part of its statement, that e-cigarettes have indeed worked as a cessation aid for some former smokers, it is clearly lying in the second part of its statement, in which it claims there is no scientific evidence that e-cigarettes can work as a cessation aid.
Interestingly, it is also possible that electronic cigarettes could have exactly the opposite effect. It is possible that some youths who might have initiated smoking will instead try electronic cigarettes. Further, it is plausible that after using electronic cigarettes, youth may be much less likely to progress to cigarette smoking because compared to the taste and sensation of vaping, the experience of cigarette smoking will not be appealing.
According to the letter: "Today Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Sen. Tom Harkin, and Rep. Peter Welch sent a letter to California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, and Vermont Attorney General William H. Sorrell urging them to classify electronic cigarettes as cigarettes under the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) to prevent e-cigarette companies from targeting youth and getting them addicted to their products. ... Classifying e-cigarettes as cigarettes under the MSA would prohibit tobacco companies from targeting youth in advertising and marketing of these products."
