If this study leads some smokers to smoke inside because they believe the researchers, who say that thirdhand smoke is no less harmful than secondhand smoke, then this could lead to serious public health harm to children.

Hopefully, Dr. Foulds and his group will next repeat the study using a sample of dual users (electronic cigarettes and regular cigarettes) to determine whether or not dual users experience a similar reduction in their overall level of smoking addiction.

In fact, there is no evidence for any of the three parts ofSenator Blumenthal’s statement. There is no scientific evidence thate-cigarettes addict children to nicotine. There is no evidence thate-cigarettes lure children into a lifetime of smoking addiction. And there isno evidence that e-cigarettes cost our society billions of dollars.

Far from being in touch with public health and science,Senator Blumenthal is lying to the public about the science in order to promotehis e-cigarette flavorings ban. The truth is that there is absolutely noscientific evidence that e-cigarettes addict youth and cause them to transitioninto a lifetime of smoking addiction.

Public policy should be evidence-based. This is especiallytrue for public health policy. If we follow Senator Blumenthal’s lead, publichealth policy is going to be formulated based on politics rather than science.
