If the FDA is not sure that removing all of the carcinogens from cigarettes - and reducing their concentrations to no more than trace levels - is going to make "smoking" safer (even forgetting the fact that there is no smoke and no combustion associated with vaping), then one has to ask whether the FDA is basing its positions only on science, and not on any political or ideological concerns.

Ironically, Dr. Glantz (and numerous anti-smoking groups) are supporting the protective legislation. Which raises the question: Who is acting more as a Big Tobacco front group? The e-cigarette associations, which are fighting protective legislation for tobacco cigarettes, or Glantz and the anti-smoking groups, which are trying to get protective legislation ensconced in every state throughout the country, so that cigarette profits are protected nationwide?

What is most disturbing to me about this story is that there is clearly no room for a difference in opinion in the tobacco control movement about certain dogmatic elements of the field. You can't express disagreement without facing personal attack, no matter how well you support your argument with scientific evidence. Like a religion, you can't challenge the gospel-like nature of movement's mantra without being viewed as a heretic.

The truth is that e-cigarettes will only "seriously disadvantage" the NRT market if they work better as quitting aids. In my experience—and the experience of countless other people—e-cigarettes are much better substitutes for smoking. If they were really a "gateway" to smoking, e-cigarettes would be good for companies like Glaxo as they would create more smokers (NRT companies need there to be smokers just as much as cigarette companies do)."
