This Saturday, on the 50th anniversary of the 1964 report, Dr. Alan Blum - director of the Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society at the University of Alabama - released a new that highlights what he "the persistent foot-dragging, fear, and squandering of funds by public health agencies, universities, and medical associations alike in ending the smoking pandemic."

While the attacks were mostly personal, and not worthy of expounding here, the shred of substance was that more recent studies which compared lung cancer risks of successive cohorts of smokers have found increased risk among more recent cohorts. From these studies, the Surgeon General's report - and these co-authors - conclude that filters must convey an increased risk of cancer.

What the study did show was subclinical evidence of impaired lung function, meaning that the observed (measurable) lung function was unchanged, but that there was evidence of physiologic effects consistent with some bronchial inflammation. What is not known is whether this acute bronchial inflammation has any significance in the long-term. The presence of bronchial inflammation may be a result of propylene glycol having a respiratory irritant effect. But this does not necessarily mean that long-term exposure would lead to any adverse effect on lung function. More research is necessary to clarify that point.

The article reports the results of a cross-sectional sample of adolescents interviewed in 2011 and 2012 in the National Youth Tobacco Survey. Youths were asked to report their smoking status as well as their e-cigarette use, both any use and current use (at least once in the past month).
