Public policy should be evidence-based. This is especiallytrue for public health policy. If we follow Senator Blumenthal’s lead, publichealth policy is going to be formulated based on politics rather than science.

The letter requests that the Attorneys General define electronic cigarettes as being cigarettes under the MSA and argues that doing so will bring electronic cigarette companies under the terms of the MSA, therefore placing severe restrictions on the advertising and marketing of these products.

Unquestionably, there is still the need to regulate the sale and marketing of electronic cigarettes to minors. Sadly, and ironically, the only ones who seem to oppose laws to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors are the supposedly "anti-smoking" groups.

• There is no evidence at the current time that kids are starting out with e-cigarettes and then going on to smoke conventional cigarettes.

I summarize my argument as follows: "In recent years, the tobacco control movement has squandered the opportunity to reduce smoking-related disease and death. Instead of continued progress, the tobacco control movement has largely been co-opted by a bureaucracy of national organizations that seem more concerned about bolstering their funding streams than fighting the tobacco industry. Both the government and the national tobacco control organizations have largely abandoned the fight against the tobacco industry and smoking, and instead have dedicated themselves to seeking funding for research or policy that makes little or no further contribution to the protection of the public’s health."

But it doesn't end there.

The rest of the story is that GASP as well as New Jersey politicians who are pretending to show a genuine concern for the public's health are actually showing little but hypocrisy and political cowardice. In 2014, I don't see any need for this kind of public health nonsense.
