Another recent study published late May in the Addiction Journal showed that the e-vapor produced in electronic cigarettes “can contain some of the toxinspresent in tobacco smoke, but at levels which are much lower.” This study conducted by 5 researchers, 2 of which were linked to a Federal Drug Administration tobacco panel, used approximately 81 different studies during its overall review. In conjunction, a scientific review on e-cigs from theconcluded with the comparison of conventional cigarettes, claiming that they are less likely to be as harmful. Peter Hajek of Londons Queen Mary University states “the evidence we currently have is clear: e-cigarettes should be allowed to compete against conventional cigarettes in the marketplace. Health care professionals may advise smokers who are unwilling to cease nicotine use to switch to e-cigarettes. Smokers who have not managed to stop with current treatments may also benefit from switching to e-cigarettes.”

The restriction is inappropriate because it prohibits companies from simply telling consumers the truth about the relative safety of their products. Arguably, this is the single most important piece of information that every consumer needs to know. Keeping consumers in the dark about the relative safety of electronic cigarettes vs. tobacco cigarettes does not serve any public health interest. In fact, it does just the opposite.

Many E-Juice vendors are often more than happy to disclose the ingredients being used and where they are being purchased as these are mostly small business owners. They may not disclose the recipes in which they combine the different flavorings but every E-Juice vendorI’vetalked to has told me which flavoring company they purchase from and where to find additional information to see what the flavorings are made out of. Veryrarely do U.S. E-Juice vendors use any flavorings from China; most all flavorings are either based from USA or Europe (The Flavor Artist – another popular flavoring manufacture – is based out of Italy).

While many of these restrictions are reasonable, the final restriction mentioned - the prohibition on electronic cigarette companies claiming that these products are safer than tobacco cigarettes - is both inappropriate and devastating to the public health interest.
