The Senate Finance Committee will hold a hearing on the proposed electronic cigarette tax tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Hopefully, the Committee members will vote on the side of protecting the public's health rather than protecting cigarette profits.

Apparently, the American College of Chest Physicians would rather that smokers die from the known risks of tobacco cigarettes than greatly improve their health by switching to electronic cigarettes, which has unknown long-term risks - although they are certainly orders of magnitude safer than real cigarettes. At least the smokers will know what they're dying from.

Importantly, the ERS did not qualify its statement. It did not state that it is opposed to the use of e-cigarettes by smokers who may be able to quit without them. It did not state that it is opposed to the use of e-cigarettes except among smokers who cannot quit without them. It simply stated its blanket opposition to any and all use of electronic cigarettes by smokers.

This study, although limited to only three brands of electronic cigarettes, provides reassuring evidence that there do not, at present, appear to be major concerns about substantial health hazards associated with secondhand exposure to electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes are not for everyone, and this study was not designed to examine the proportion of smokers who will be successful in quitting or cutting down substantially. However, it does document that among those who are successful in becoming ex-smokers or dual users with substantially lowered cigarette consumption, they will likely experience an improvement in their respiratory health.
