As I point out in the piece, the CDC is partly responsible for the backlash against e-cigarettes because it publicly concluded that e-cigarettes are a gateway to smoking:

In their to this response, the authors of the study clarify their reasoning for attacking the cigarette companies, even though they merely complied with the law:

"And most importantly, you are not just anecdotes. Each one of you is a real, courageous person who has accomplished one of the most difficult personal struggles that a person can face in terms of health behavior: quitting smoking, one of the strongest and most powerful addictions. Congratulations!"

Smoking status was then assessed at the time of the interview to determine the rates of successful quitting during the most recent quit attempt, comparing the three groups: (1) e-cigarettes only; (2) NRT only; and (3) no cessation aids. The total sample size was 5,863.

The problem is that in this cross-sectional study, there is no way to determine the direction of the observed relationship.

These results, while preliminary, provide initial evidence that electronic cigarettes may serve not only as a means of helping smokers to quit, but also of helping them to eventually become free of nicotine addiction.
