The misinformation in the tobacco control field is so widespread that hardly a day goes by that an anti-smoking advocate somewhere doesn't publicly declare that smoking may be no more dangerous than vaping. Yesterday, it was the Sedgwick County Health Department (Wichita, KS), which wrote in an op-ed in the Kansas City Star:

According to a Business Standard entitled "Third-Hand Smoke Just as Lethal as First-Hand Smoke": "A scientist at the University of California, Riverside suggests that second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke are just as deadly as first-hand smoke. While first-hand smoke refers to the smoke inhaled by a smoker and second-hand smoke to the exhaled smoke and other substances emanating from the burning cigarette that can get inhaled by others, third-hand smoke is the second-hand smoke that gets left on the surfaces of objects, ages over time and becomes progressively more toxic."

The rest of the story is that despite the Common Rule and the intense efforts to try to prevent human subject violations in research, there are still occasional studies which find their way through the cracks. This is one bad example. It is an example of an unethical experiment that should never have been approved by an IRB in its current form because it blatantly violates the ethical principles of both consent and informed consent.

Further, the FDA is asking smokers who suffer such extra-ordinary health effects to report them to the agency. But the FDA doesn't want to hear from you if you simply suffer a "normal" health effect, like crippling obstructive lung disease, inability to breathe, metastatic cancer, or brain infarctions. In order to engage the FDA's interest, the health problem must be one that is beyond these "normal" product side effects.

This same cause and effect theory tells us that: if the likelihood of quitting smoking is low, smoking will continue to kill people. It is like the system is broke, and we are foolish to continue to use the same tactics and expect different results. We continue to try to get smokers to quit, but as long as tobacco is available, people are going to suffer from .
