This is actually what is wrong with our country: politicians who pretend to be acting in the public's interest but who are actually acting in interest of our nation's largest and most profitable corporations.

For example, if e-cigarettes are taxed as heavily as cigarettes, then cigarettes are protected from competition and have a huge market advantage. If e-cigarette use is not allows in the same places where smoking is allowed, then cigarettes also are protected from competition and gain a huge market advantage.

The restriction is inappropriate because it prohibits companies from simply telling consumers the truth about the relative safety of their products. Arguably, this is the single most important piece of information that every consumer needs to know. Keeping consumers in the dark about the relative safety of electronic cigarettes vs. tobacco cigarettes does not serve any public health interest. In fact, it does just the opposite.

If this is the kind of "scientific" reasoning that is going to guide the nation's decisions on how to handle tobacco products which are killing hundreds of thousands of Americans each year, then we may actually be better off reverting back to the "wild, wild west" that Stan Glantz keeps talking about. At least in that wild west, consumers are able to make reasonable judgments about the relative safety of different products. In the FDA-regulated "east," consumers are going to be kept hidden from even the most basic truths: that electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco and that they are much safer than the real thing.
