Ironically, banning the flavors in electronic cigarettes could have the perverse effect of decreasing e-cigarette use but increasing use of real tobacco cigarettes. Hopefully, the FDA will examine this issue closely before taking the advice of anti-smoking groups and advocates, who are already calling for a ban on e-cigarette flavorings.

This irresponsible advice, supported by a fraudulent lie - that smoking may be safer than vaping - represents public health malpractice, in my opinion. In fact, as it may convince some smokers to continue smoking rather than switch to a non-tobacco product that has helped thousands quit smoking, it could actually constitute medical malpractice, as this negligent information and advice could actually lead to medical harm.

With this kind of foresight, these researchers could have easily won $250,000 to fund their research without having to bother the taxpayers. They could have simply put a $2,500 bet on the first score in the Super Bowl being a safety and they would have saved the state of California a quarter of a million bucks.

This irony is bizarre, but also quite unfortunate, as the undermining of anti-smoking messages from the e-cigarette industry by health groups is contributing to an unhealthy and incorrect perception that cigarette smoking is no worse than vaping. This incorrect perception is no doubt deterring many smokers from quitting or cutting down substantially on their cigarette consumption by trying e-cigarettes. Thus, the efforts of the FDA, CDC, and other health groups are actually aiding the cigarette companies by helping to protect cigarette sales from competition from the fake, non-tobacco variety.

One would expect a similar experience with youth e-cigarette experimenters. Once they get used to the sweet flavors of electronic cigarettes, it is hard to fathom that they could then be drawn to the harsh taste of tobacco. It is difficult to imagine a youth switching from a gummy bear flavored e-cigarette to a Marlboro.
