Harris et al., in perhaps the most comprehensive and definitive on this issue, found a clear increase in cancer risk associated with non-filtered cigarettes. As they reported: "Compared with smokers of medium tar (15-21 mg) filter cigarettes, risk was higher among men and women who smoked high tar (> or = 22 mg) non-filter brands (hazard ratio 1.44, 95% confidence interval 1.20 to 1.73, and 1.64, 1.26 to 2.15, respectively)."

As the tobacco companies are no longer using these descriptor terms, they are in compliance with the federal law. They cannot possibly be found in violation of the law for using alternative names for their products when the law specifically allowed those products to remain on the market.

The study concludes: "Among smokers who have attempted to stop without professional support, those who use e-cigarettes are more likely to report continued abstinence than those who used a licensed NRT product bought over-the-counter or no aid to cessation."

In an published last week in the Los Angeles Times, CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden was quoted as stating:

The answer, sadly, is D - ban vape shops which sell cigarettes to zero youth in Daly City. Moreover, youths are not even allowed in these vape shops and it would be quite easy to adopt rules to ensure that youths do not have access to these stores.
