"By January 2014 there were 466 brands (each with its own website) and 7,764 unique flavors. ... Newer brands offered more flavors per brand (49 vs. 32) ... ."

In a press release issued Monday by 13 members of Congress, a group of politicians claimed that there is "more" evidence that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to smoking.

At the time the experiment was initiated in 1932, the treatment for syphilis involved toxic drugs. However, by the 1940's, penicillin was readily available as a treatment for this infection. Nevertheless, the study continued and penicillin was not made available to these black men. Nor were they informed about the availability of the medicine or even of what disease they actually had.

What is the new "evidence" that e-cigarettes are a gateway to smoking? According to the letter sent by these politicians to the FDA: "What’s even more troubling is that these products serve as a gateway to traditional tobacco products. A recent JAMA Pediatrics study found that middle and high-school students who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes and less likely to quit smoking."

Nevertheless, this does not stop the authors from drawing a conclusion. They conclude, despite their acknowledged inability to draw such a conclusion, that: "e-cigarette use is aggravating rather than ameliorating the tobacco epidemic among youths."

Simply put, they argue that what needs to happen is for tobacco control scientists to start being honest, to adhere to good scientific practice, and to guide their conclusions by evidence rather than emotions.

For those out there that are unfamiliar with WHO, the World Health Organization is the directing and coordination authority for health in the United Nations. They are responsible for any and all health related matters around the world, setting standards, streamlining health agendas, supporting and monitoring countries in health related matters, and articulating evidence-based policy options. WHO counters all new and emerging health threats around the globe it is strange as well as concerning that they take an interest in E-Cigs at all especially since their basis for this ban is the lack of research and evidence on E-Cigs rather than having research and evidence to support their assessment.
