Is this really the kind of pure scientific expertise - unclouded by any ideological or political concerns - that we want to be making the critical decisions about how to regulate tobacco products which are killing hundreds of thousands of Americans each year?

On his tobacco , Dr. Stan Glantz links to a quite inappropriate advertisement for blu electronic cigarettes, attacking Lorillard for using this approach to promote e-cigarette use. He claims that this is part of Lorillard's ongoing strategy, accusing Lorillard of stooping to this low tactic to recruit youth to vaping. The ad depicts a robot having sex with a woman and then afterwards shunning a cigarette and offering an e-cigarette instead.

This creates a huge incentive for Congress, and the President, not to take any action that would substantially reduce cigarette consumption. For example, it would create an incentive to bury electronic cigarettes somewhere under the Beltway so they cannot compete with the traditional cigarette products.

"It is not known how much nicotine or other potentially harmful chemicals are inhaled by users, nor is it known whether e-cigarette use may lead to use of other tobacco products. Neither are the benefits of using e-cigarettes over traditional products known."

"That's the only word I can think [of] that's apposite here," he said.
