It is worth noting that the conclusions which Dr. Glantz is disseminating are destructive because they undermine decades of public education about the severe hazards of smoking. If the public thinks that smoking is only as risky as vaping, then it is likely that many smokers will decide to continue smoking rather than quitting using electronic cigarettes. And many ex-smokers who have quit with electronic cigarettes may return to smoking, thinking that they might as well since they are not getting any definite health benefit from having made the switch.

What makes the Citizens Medical Center policy particularly ugly is that they justify it by arguing that their patients don't want to see obese people people it doesn't fit with their "mental projection" of a healthcare professional. That is simply disgusting. The same thing could have been said years ago (or maybe today) about certain other groups, such as black health care workers, LGBT workers, or Jewish workers.

Suppose that there are 1000 e-cigarette users who enter the cancer center with a diagnosis of cancer. Of these, an amazing 900 were able to quit smoking. However, 100 were very resistant smokers and could not quit smoking, even with e-cigarettes. Note that it would be these 100 resistant smokers who would be enrolled in the study. The 900 ex-smokers who quit using e-cigarettes would not be eligible for the study, because they no longer smoke.

The Michigan Medical Society has that would protect the public's health by prohibiting the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.
