1. Between 2003 and 2008, one of the authors performed consultation services for R.J. Reynolds and Lorillard and conducted research at his medical school which was funded by R.J. Reynolds, Brown & Williamson, and Liggett. The total annual amount of his consulting payments from Big Tobacco was as high as $40,000. While the amount of grant funding received from tobacco companies is not clear, one of the anti-smoking groups has documented that the level of funding in 2005 was $400,000 and in 2004 was $1 million.

Instead, these were all population-based studies of smoking and e-cigarette use that did not even ask smokers using e-cigarettes if they were using them regularly or if they were using them in an effort to quit smoking. Actually, one of the studies did ask smokers if they were using e-cigarettes to quit smoking and the overwhelming majority said that they were not. In other words, many of the smokers in this study were probably just experimenting with, or trying an e-cigarette, and were not regular users of these products.

It the policy were based on health principles, then it certainly would not exempt current employees. Clearly, the hospital doesn't care that much about the health principle, since it will continue to employ smokers with no questions asked.
