The truth is that these groups are stuck - trapped in a blinding ideology in which science plays absolutely no role and positions are based on pure, raw emotion. If the American Lung Association were sincere in its alleged belief that no nicotine-containing products should have flavors that attract kids, then the first and most important action it would take is to demand an immediate ban on the use of menthol flavoring in cigarettes. Short of that, all of this claptrap about eliminating flavors that attract kids and requiring companies to alter their products to help reduce tobacco's lethal toll is a bunch of crap.

At the end of the article, the authors include their Conflict of Interest Disclosure, which reads: "The authors have completed and submitted the ICMJE Form for Disclosure of Potential Conflicts of Interest and none were reported." Thus, Dr. Fiore is reporting having no conflicts of interest with regards to the subject matter of this commentary (which includes his recommendation that all smoking patients be treated with drugs, which he states is the standard of care).

To make matters worse, Dr. Samet is not just an author, but served as one of the two editors of the report.
