By blocking e-cigarette companies from telling the truth to consumers, CAP has completely undermined the very purpose of electronic cigarette marketing. The only reason these products are on the market and being used extensively in the first place is that they are much safer than regular cigarettes. If they weren't safer than cigarettes, there would be no justification for these products to even remain on the market. Moreover, they would not have become so popular among smokers because no one is going to switch to a product that delivers less nicotine unless it has health benefits.

An published in the current issue of Addiction recounts the many ways in which tobacco control researchers have been dishonest with the public about the science regarding electronic cigarettes. It then discusses what needs to happen moving forward, and concludes that what is needed is for tobacco control researchers to be honest.

"“The majority of our patients are over 65, and they have expectations that cannot be ignored in terms of personal appearance,” hospital chief executive David Brown said in an interview. “We have the ability as an employer to characterize our process and to have a policy that says what’s best for our business and for our patients.” Employment lawyers say Citizens Medical Center’s hiring policy isn’t against the law. Only the state of Michigan and six U.S. cities — including San Francisco and Washington, D.C. — ban discrimination against the overweight in hiring."

While the FDA has given its official stamp of approval to the "normal" cigarettes that are killing more than 400,000 Americans each year and has taken no action to reduce the hazards of smoking, we can all be grateful that the agency has stepped in to protect the public from cigarettes that smell or taste wrong.
